North Texans Needed to Participate in CPS-3

North Texans have an unprecedented opportunity to participate in a historic national study that has the potential to change the face of cancer for   future generations. On Saturday, Jan. 28 from 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., the American Cancer Society will be enrolling local residents in Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) at two American Cancer Society offices:

Dallas office – 8900 John W. Carpenter Frwy., Dallas 75247

Fort Worth office- at 3301 West Frwy, Fort Worth 76107

Men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer are needed to participate in the study. A diverse population of up to half a million people across the United States and Puerto Rico are needed for researchers to better understand the lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer.

To enroll in the study, individuals will need to do the following:

  • Read and sign an informed consent form;
  • Complete a comprehensive survey that asks for information on lifestyle, behavioral, and other health-related factors;
  • Have height, weight, blood pressure, heart rate, and waist circumference measured;
  • Give a small blood sample.

The in-person enrollment process takes approximately an hour to complete. Periodic follow-up surveys of various lengths are expected to be sent every few years to participants.

For more information or to learn how to become involved with CPS-3, visit cancer.org/cps3, email cps3@cancer.org, or call toll-free 1-888-604-5888. To register for CPS-3, visit www.seeuthere.com/cps3enroll/dfwtx.

Dallas Cattle Baron’s Ball on Top Chef Dec. 7 Episode

Cattle Baron’s Ball of Dallas
will be featured on the Bravo network’s popular Top Chef Texas Wednesday, Dec. 7 (9 p.m. CST).

Last July, Cattle Baron’s Ball committee members, and American Cancer Society supporters and staff were part of a secretly taped show filmed at iconic Southfork Ranch in Parker, Texas.

Sitting at the judges’ table were Maria Clark, American Cancer Society North Texas regional vice president, and Jennifer Dix, 2011 Cattle Baron’s Ball chairman. The show featured a Cattle Baron’s Ball-type dinner with guests clad in fine western attire.

Here’s the Bravo episode description:

“In this week’s Quickfire, the chefs create a dish stemming from one of four mother sauces. They will explore the endless possibilities of this classic technique and go back to the basics of haute cuisine. They’ll each select one of the four mother sauces – Béchamel, Espagnole, Velouté and Allemande – to work with.

The stakes are high in the elimination challenge as the chefs create their best steak dish for the Cattle Baron’s Ball. The chefs will be putting out a progressive four-course beef menu for 200-seated guests. They’ll have to work together to plate every last dish before 50 waiters enter to pick-up the plates. It’s high society – suits with cowboy boots, big hair and even bigger stakes because if there is one state who knows a thing or two about how a steak should be cooked, it’s Texas! Guest judge Dean Fearing joins Hugh Acheson, head judge Tom Colicchio, and host Padma Lakshmi.”

Cattle Baron’s Ball is the American Cancer Society’s largest single-night fundraiser. Since 1974, the ball has raised more than $48 million for cancer research. Visit cattlebaronsball.com for information about the legendary Cattle Baron’s Ball and sponsorship opportunities.

And, to the patients and families served by our programs and services.
